Beer Commissioner Speaks on Expectations
The Beer Commissioner received an email this week related to his blog. So, first and foremost, I need to address the email. The email stated in part, "...no one cares about baseball - please write more about the cat pissing on your blanket." The Beer Commissioner is, after all a service oriented blogger. I promise, no more baseball blogs, at least for a little while. I can't promise any blogs about the cat pissing on my blanket either, as I'm hoping that never happens again.
I saw a news story today that got me thinking about expectations. Yesterday, the United States swore in a new president, and this news story was related to our new president. I'm not going to say anything good or bad about him, or the story. This is just an observation, but before the observation, I need to discuss 'expectations'.
For instance, if you ever come to the Beer Commissioner's house, you have an expectation that you are going to get as much ice-cold beer as you could possible want to drink, and generally, there is a wide variety of beer to choose from.
If you are unfortunate enough to have a wife/girlfriend/partner that owns a cat, you have an expectation the cat will use the litter box, and will hate you. In my case, apparently one out of two is going to have to do, unless you count my blanket as a litter box, in which case I'm golden.
Sometimes in life, your expectations are exceeded. For example, if you go to Las Vegas, you have the expectation of having a good time and losing money. If you don't expect to lose money, you are probably get lots of comps in Las Vegas, and you are stupid. In any event, should you come home from Vegas with more money than you had when you started, you exceeded your expectations.
Sometimes in life, you are disappointed with expectations. Some guys are disappointed to find out, the lovely Sapphire, who had just spent the last hour dancing on your lap, and has just rolled you for all of your money, is not going to go with them to their hotel. They might have had the expectation because Sapphire purred those very words in your ears, but alas, disappointment sets in when you are out of money, and you see Sapphire with another 'friend.'
Finally, sometimes you are just left scratching your head over what your expectations are. Today, our new president announced he was implemented a pay freeze for all his new staffers. This really struck me as odd. These people have been on the job for one day. ONE DAY. Did they have an expectation of getting a raise on the first day? Did they have an expectation of getting a raise this Friday? I'm not sure. Why was it so important to make an announcement that all new employees, who have been on the job for one day, are having their salaries frozen?
Well, it is almost happy hour, I expect I'll be having a beer soon!
